Sometimes it can be quite difficult for postgraduates to find accommodation both at the University and in the surrounding areas. Here are some handy tips and resources to help you get settled down in York:

Join the Find a Housemate GSA Facebook Group

This Facebook group is very active and there is plenty of options posted up regularly. Click here to find the group on Facebook.

The University also provides a services which allows students to place their own adverts offering rooms and houses. The University also provides an up-to-date list of lettings agencies as well as links to helpful property/room search websites.

Problems with your accommodation

If you are having problems with your University accommodation, the GSA Advice Service can support you with information about how to approach the University to ensure problems are resolved. You can also find out more about the University accommodation complaint process on their webpage.

The GSA are not able to provide support for students having problems with their private sector accommodation. However, the Student Advisers in the Student Hub are able to provide support with this – you can find contact details for the Student Hub on the University website.

Private Sector

Although we cannot endorse any specific agency, we do have a list of websites below which may be useful. Social media sites, such as York residents groups and York student Facebook pages, have been active recently with the local community trying to help students with housing searches.

Please Note.

Before signing any tenancy agreement you should ensure you are fully happy with the details as it is a legally binding contract. The York University Student Hub can provide some advice on accommodation and they have a useful Tenancy Agreement Checking Guide on their website. It is recommended to have someone else with you when viewing a property as they can provide a useful second opinion. They also might notice issues with the property that you may miss or have questions for the landlord/agent that might not occur to you at the time, as well as making you feel safer and more comfortable than if you were viewing the property alone.
