International Women’s Day

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #ChooseToChallenge.

According to the IWD website “We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.” Challenging and recognising gender bias and inequalities is a demanding process that requires knowledge and the awareness that stems from it. For this reason, this year York GSA has decided to put together a list of open access material, with videos, articles, podcasts, and links for events organised by the university or York International Women’s Week 2021. All of us are encouraged to attend as many things as we can, listen to different voices, challenge our views, read, watch, and expand our perception of gender inequalities.

Each day, we will be sharing a list of material on a linktree (which will also be accessible via Instagram bio @gsayorkuni). Each day we will be sharing material related to a theme: International Women’s Day History; Women in the Arts, Culture, and Thought; Women, Technology, and Sciences; Women in Academia; Women in Film. Also on Tuesday, at the GSA weekly event of “Coffee and Crafts,” we will use found material from the web to make different digital pieces related to #IWD2021; this event is open to all, but you need to sign up in order to receive the zoom link. Our #ChooseToChallenge week will finish with a zoom gathering on Friday 12 March, 18:00-19:00, in which we will be able to discuss our thoughts from what we read, watched, and listened to during the week and celebrate #IWD2021 – please sign up here to receive the zoom invitation.

And let us not forget: “From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.”
