GSA Welcome to New Students
Welcome to York!
If you’re reading this you’re probably a new postgraduate student due to be starting in September. The good news is we send you an email with everything you need to know about the GSA and Welcome Week before you start. The bad news is we don’t tend to get everyone’s emails until after you’ve arrived.
That’s why we’ve put together this post which covers all of the important content from that email in case you don’t get in time.
The GSA
York is one of only three Universities in the country with a specialist Students’ Union just for postgraduates. The Graduate Student’s Association provides:
- Elected postgraduate officers who make sure the University listens to the needs of postgrads.
- Trained advisers who understand the issues postgraduates face when completing their Masters or PhD.
- A dedicated staff team who deliver a range of activities and events just for postgrads.
- A weekly postgrad newsletter focussing on the information you need to know.
We’re here in the good times and the bad to make sure you can make the most of your time at the University of York.

Welcome Week
September 17th – September 23rd
To help you get settled in to York and make lots of new friends, the Graduate Students’ Association puts on a week of social events, activities and welcome talks just for postgrads.
You can find details for all the events on our GSA Welcome Week Events Calendar. We also produce a physical welcome guide which you’ll get when you arrive in York either in your accommodation if you’re on campus or in private halls, or from the GSA office of information stand.
WELCOME WEEK WRISTBAND
A wristband will be available to purchase which covers all our big events as well as discounts on our first trip and other discounts throughout the week! Wristbands are £15 if you buy before the 8th of September (limited availability).
Click here to purchase your Welcome Week wristband
If you don’t want to buy a wristband you can pay on the door for each event, although we can’t guarantee entry without a wristband as venue capacity is limited for all events.

Guide for International Students
Every year international students tell us that they can sometimes struggle to understand UK customs or how do something UK students take for granted, like accessing the NHS.
In order to help new international students we’ve put together a handy guide covering some of the basics and answering those questions you might feel silly asking.
