GSA Apple Day at Newby Hall

Rumoured to be the inspiration for Downton Abbey, Newby Hall is a fine example of a classic country mansion on the River Ure near Ripon, North Yorkshire. Newby Hall has featured in period dramas such as Gentleman Jack, Peaky Blinders, Victoria, and the TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park.

In the morning, you’ll receive a guided tour of the Grade I-listed house, hearing about its extensive history and taking in the beautifully preserved 18th century interior decoration. Newby Hall was built by the highly acclaimed architect Sir Christopher Wren, who also designed the masterpiece of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

You will then have free time to roam the house and gardens, which will be hosting the Annual International Apple Day and Apple Throwing Championships! Competitors attempt to throw an apple over the River Ure to win the prestigious title and trophy. Other activities include apple pressing demonstrations, cider tasting, and displays of the fruit from Newby Hall’s orchard.

There are a wealth of activities to do at this North Yorkshire house, from beautiful garden displays and exhibitions, to pedalos and boat trips, there is plenty to enjoy.

This is the last chance to enjoy Newby Hall in 2023 before its winter closure, so don’t miss out!
