Academic Representation

The University of York has a multi-tiered system of student representation. Postgraduates elect or co-opt representatives at three levels:

Course Reps

Course Reps are elected or co-opted by Postgraduate students on their programme of study or research throughout the year. Different departments use different methods, with most departments opting for the informal appointment of reps through nomination/co-option whilst others run their own online elections. Look out for more information during Postgraduate Welcome Week and your departmental inductions.

Course Reps represent students in departments and attend the Board of Studies meetings, student-staff forums and other departmental committees.

*Co-opt/Co-option – appoint to membership of a committee or other body by invitation of the existing members.

Training dates can be seen below. Reps need only attend one session to be fully trained.

School Reps

School Reps are recruited by their respective School through an informal application and interview process. They represent students to their Faculty, and attend the Faculty Board meetings.

GSA Officers

The GSA has three full-time sabbatical officers, with the Vice President Academic representing students on academic matters across the University. To see our current Officer Team click here!
