Student Action Groups
To improve the way that students are represented, the GSA and YUSU are piloting a project this year you can get involved with. 6 departments have replaced Course and Department Reps with Student Action Groups for 2022/2023 period.
A Student Action Groups is a team of paid students, known as Champions, who are recruited to represent the views of all students in their departments. Champions collect feedback from students about issues, ranging from course-related matters to the lived experience of students in that department more generally. They consult different groups of students to identify who is affected by a myriad of issues, and work together in collaboration with departmental staff to identify solutions.
Student Action Groups are being piloted in the following 6 departments:
- Archaeology
- Biology
- Economics
- Environment
- History of Art
- Sociology
How much time does it take to be a Champion?
Champions are expected to work around 2-3 hours per week during term time, but are able to work more should they choose. There exists mandatory training which Champions must complete, however all sessions will be available online if Champions cannot attend in person.
How much are Champions paid?
Champions are paid £200 each per term (£600 per year).
Do you need any experience to be a Champion?
You do not need any previous experience to be a Champion; all you must have is a passion for making the student voice heard, and an aptitude for independent and team working.
