Sign Language is a visual system of communicating using gestures and facial expression, while British Sign Language (BSL) is the most predominantly used among the UK deaf community. In this online session, you will have the opportunity to get an insight into a new language. After a short introduction regarding deaf awareness and how the sign language system works, you will have a chance to learn the alphabet, and some basic communication skills (e.g. how to sign your name and introduce yourself), which you will get the opportunity to practice with your peers.

More about the speaker

Audrius Kiminius was born and grew up in Lithuania. He lost his hearing at a very young age, so his first language was Lithuanian sign language which he learned from attending deaf nursery and schools. He moved to the UK in 2010, where he had no understanding of British sign language, so he studied BSL levels 1 – 6 and gained his certificates in 2015. He qualified as a BSL teacher in 2017 and has been teaching ever since. He now runs a successful company offering BSL courses and Deaf Awareness Training to companies and individuals and provides interpreters or communication support for the deaf community.
