Student Parents
The University of York and the GSA welcome students with children and work to support them in every capacity available. The GSA is focusing on creating a sustained network of resources for students to assist them in their ability to focus on their studies and enjoy their time in York without too much stress placed on maintaining their family’s wellbeing.
Funding Information for Students with Children
The costs incurred for students with families will be very different to those of students without families, but will also vary from one family to another. To get an example of family costs for students with dependents in York, please refer to the Student Finance Support Unit’s budgeting advice.
Students who are in full-time higher education and have dependent children may qualify for further financial support which does not need to be paid back. Such funding schemes are dependent on your circumstances. However, you may be able to access:
- Parents’ Learning Allowance (to help towards learning costs)
- Child Tax Credits

Student Parents is a dedicated website for students with children. It addresses topics that affect students such as finance, time management and study support but from the perspective of students with children.
St Lawrence’s Children’s Centre
There are 9 Children’s Centres in York which provide a variety of services for children under five years old and their families. The activities offered aim to provide support with early learning, childcare, family support, health services and training and employment advice.
St Lawrence’s Children’s Centre is the closest to the Univesity and are very keep to work with student parents and your children. They run various groups, many that are open to all. For further details contact Sally Waudby on 01904 555257
