Security

The University of York and York city does have a relatively low crime level however this does not mean that you shouldn’t be cautious about safety and security.

The University’s Security Services, in conjunction with the Health and Safety and Welfare Department and the Safer York Partnership are holding a number of Crime Prevention events in January. These will take place on:

  • Tuesday 10 January 2012 (10am -4pm) - in the Exhibition Centre
  • Friday 13 January 2012 (10am -4pm)  - at Vanbrugh College
  • Tuesday 17 January 2012 (10am -4pm) - in the JB Morrell Library
  • Friday 20 January 2012 (10am - 4pm) - in the Ron Cooke HUB

The events are primarily aimed at students living off campus, but all students are invited. The events will provide advice on personal safety and security, fire safety and wellbeing.  Various prizes will be available including a half day spa treatment for two including lunch, other prizes such as laptop security devices to prevent your laptop from being stolen, top quality bike locks and other goodies are available including plenty of freebies and give-away items as well.

Your home:

  • Do not leave your windows open when the house is unattended

  • Ensure that doors are always locked, whether you are in the property or not, to prevent opportunist thefts

  • Do not leave cash and valuables on display

  • Insure your belongings. You can get insurance from as little at £50 for the year to cover your property against theft.

Personal safety:

  • Avoid walking alone in the dark. YUSU operate a Magic Bus for those studying late on campus and need to get home as well as Security offering an escort service across campus.

  • Use busy, well lit streets.

  • Carry a personal attack alarm. These are available from YUSU.

Cycle safety:

  • Always lock your bike using a good quality cycle lock. These are available from the University at a discounted price via the link below. It’s best to use 2 locks and insure your bike, especially if it is expensive.

  • Look out for Operation Spoke on campus. You can get your bike registered onto the national database in case of theft and recovery so your bike can be returned to you.

  • Make sure you have front and rear lights. Not only is it dangerous to cycle without them but you can also receive a fixed sum notice from the Police if found cycling without them.
