Student Finance
Student Finance England provides financial support, on behalf of the UK Government, to English students entering higher education in the UK. In addition, it allows students from England to apply for finance online. To see if you are eligible for any financial support enter your details into the Student Finance Calculator.
For other UK and EU students wishing to studying in England there are various websites that can provide you with relevant funding information. Scottish students should refer to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland website, Student Finance Northern Ireland is a useful sources for students from Northern Ireland, Student Finance Wales provides key information for Welsh Students and students from other EU countries can find information regarding funding at Directgov. Do keep in mind that a lot of information regarding funding is aimed at undergraduates so you need to carefully check what advice is applicable for postgraduates.
The university’s Student Financial Support Unit (SFSU) can provide advice to students on a variety of finance related topics including: sources of funding, managing your finances, fees and employment . The SFSU can also provide advice and support on the different hardship funds that are available to students at York.

York Student Card
You can get free admittance to the main body of York Minster and the Undercroft and Crypts on presenting a valid York student card. Entry to the tower is £4.50 with a student card.

Eating Out in York – Student Discounts
Bella Italia
Bella Italia is an Italian café, bar and restaurant offering a large selection of pasta and pizza dishes. You can find Bella Italia on Low Petergate. With a valid student card/ NUS card you will receive 50% off your food (this must include a main course and drink) on a Monday night and 20% at all other times (except bank holidays).
Pizza Express
Pizza Express is a large chain of pizza restaurants, there are two in York situated at Lendel Brige and Sampson’s Square. If you have a NUS card you can get 20% off your food bill except on Fridays and Saturdays.
Orange Wednesday’s at Pizza Express! That’s right if you are on the Orange network and show the code to the restaurant you will receive a free starters and 2 for 1 on the rest of your food.
Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut is also a chain a of pizza restaurants. In York there are two Pizza Hut restaurants one on Parliament Square and the other on Clifford Street. In addition to the restaurants Pizza Hut does home delivery. Students with NUS cards can get 20% off food at Pizza Hut, both in restaurant and home delivered.
Stonegate Yard
Situated in a Georgian town house on Little Stonegate, Stonegate Yard offers fresh, homemade and locally sourced food. With your student card you can get 15% off your food bill, except on Saturdays and bank holidays.
Zizzi
Zizzi is part of an Italian chain of restaurants. The York based restaurant is located in an old church on Lendal. You can get 25% off your food bill on presenting your student card, apart from on Friday’s and Saturday’s.
Please be aware that many food offers are not available on Friday, Saturday or Bank Holidays. Also most restaurants will not provide student discount in conjunction with another offer.
While you can access some of the above deals with your York student cards, for others you will need a NUS Extra card. These cost £11 and are valid for a year (August 2011 - August – 2012). The cards can be purchased online but you will need to have a photo of yourself that can be uploaded on to the card. Cards can then be posted out to the university or your home address.
