Legal Support

We, in the GSA, can provide help and advice with many parts of student life and the student experience, but unfortunately there are some areas that we cannot help with. We are therefore working closely with our legal advisors, Harrowells LLP, who may be able to provide the advice you are looking for or suggest suitable alternative sources of help.

Examples of issues Harrowells LLP can help with include:

  • Purchase of property to occupy and/or let out to tenants
  • Advising on the most suitable approach where joint ownership or funding of property is proposed by parents or other relatives
  • Advising graduate students on their legal rights and obligations if they are considering new business ventures, particularly those involving potential spin-out of research work

Harrowells LLP can also advise on personal and commercial disputes and personal injury claims. However, the firm does not offer ‘legal aid’ (except in cases of clinical negligence) so you may be referred to law firms offering publicly funded advice for certain kinds of advice where Harrowells LLP believe you may be legible for such funding. You can also visit the Legal Services Commission website at http://www.legalservices.gov.uk to find out more about publicly funded advice.

Should you need to talk to a legal advisor, contact the GSA office, by emailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) who can arrange for someone from Harrowells LLP to speak with you.

Please note that if your enquiry is of an academic nature (misconduct hearing, appeals or complaints) you should first contact the GSA on .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 01904 32 (2718), who will be able to provide the relevant advice.
