Department Course Reps

The GSA exist to represent graduates at University Level Committees. But without knowing what is happening in departments, we can't do this job effectively. To find out what is happening on your courses, we work with the Department Course Reps.

Getting involved with your department is a highly rewarding experience, and many tell us they had a fantastic time while in the role. You will be affecting the way your course runs not only while your here, but for future students.

Each department, school or centre at the university is governed by a Board of Studies (BOS): a committee made up of full-time academic and support staff. Postgraduate representatives for both taught masters and PhD students are elected to serve on the committee, to offer a 'student perspective' and raising any problems identified by themselves or their fellow students. Before the Board of Studies meeting, elected student representatives will be invited to submit any items they wish to discuss at the meeting for inclusion on the agenda.

We recognise the importance that Course Reps have in our work at the GSA, and for this reason, all Course Reps sit on the GSA Academic Affairs Committee, chaired by Academic Affairs Officer Kieran Alden. One course rep from each department also has a seat on Association Council; the body which runs the GSA.

In collaboration with YUSU and the University, we have produced a guide for all Course Reps. Click here to download a copy of this guide.
