Departments
Each department, school or centre at the university is governed by a Board of Studies (BOS): a committee made up of full-time academic and other support staff. Depending on the department, postgraduate representatives for both taught masters and PhD students (as well as graduates who teach) are elected to serve on the committee, offer a 'student perspective' and raising any problems they identify or have brought to their attention. They are often referred to as Board of Studies (BOS) representatives.
Every year, all these representatives are elected in Week 5 of the autumn term, coordinated by the GSA and YUSU (graduates are elected via this site, undergrads on www.yusu.org).
Boards of Studies representatives provide a critically important function within the GSA, serving as a frequent point of contact between the organisation and our membership. Because of this, the GSA convenes a twice-termly forum for all representatives, to discuss various campaigns and to get a sense of issues that might be affecting more than one department. These meetings occur in weeks 2 and 6 of each term, and minutes will be posted on this page.
