The University of York is highly supportive of all students who wish to explore the ideas and practice of starting up a business or social enterprise. Look out for the many events and courses relating to enterprise and entrepreneurship available from the Researcher Development Team and the York Entrepreneurs Society. In addition, through the Careers Service and the Enterprise Centre in the Hub Building, a number of practical options are available to Post Graduate students seriously considering enterprising ideas.
Firstly, you can have a confidential chat with an advisor who can point you in the direction of specialist support; even paying for initial consultations with a professional business mentor if necessary. Secondly, the University can offer free work space and facilities to a student business, including access to design and accounting software and networking with fellow entrepreneurs. Finally, funding is also available to help kick start an enterprise. The ‘Proof of Concept’ fund can offer a grant of between £250 and £1,000 to help see if an idea can survive as an actual business.
Please note that if your business idea is related in any way to your research then you will need to discuss this with your supervisor and potentially one of the University’s Business Development Managers before seeking Student Enterprise Support.
