Since becoming a GSA Sports Officer in November, I've been focusing on our commitment to get more postgraduates involved in sport, particularly female and international students.

Some of our main achievements which I've been involved with have been:

  • Launching the GSA Netball Club and Wentworth team in the inter-college league
  • Introducing recreational sport sessions for a range of sports including dodgeball, frisbee and rounders
  • Organising GSA Yoga on Tuesday evenings (just £1)
  • Running the first GSA Kids Club for children of students and staff
  • Learning to play football and taking part in the women's college football tournament
  • Getting a brilliant turn-out for GSA Tennis on Saturday afternoons
  • Helping to design the GSA's online questionnaire which will be going out over the Easter holiday
  • Setting up new procedures including risk assessments, bookings, attendance lists, and feedback
  • Raising the profile of postgraduates through running for University Sports President (www.sportviking.org.uk)
  • Giving out free fruit!

Some of my aims for the rest of the year are to:

  • Continue to increase postgraduate participation in sport
  • Run a fun GSA event at Roses, the massive sports tournament between York and Lancaster from 8th-10th May
  • Set up a booking system with our Webmaster James, which can be used for various events
  • Make sure our procedures are documented so next year's sports officers can continue and build on this year's achievements
  • Organise a whole range of sporting activities during Grad Welcome Week and ensure these are well publicised in advance

That's all for now..... please get in touch with myself, Samik or Jian at sports@yorkgsa.org if you want to get involved!
