Alumni Mentoring, Get Involved and Get Connected (Monday 21 May, 4:30pm – 6pm, Heslington Hall)
All Postgraduate Students are invited to register for an exciting programme to promote professional connections, give first hand insights into industry, and help with career planning and confidence. The alumni mentoring programme will run for five weeks, and is informal. Students will be matched with alumni based on their interests and outlooks. There will be suggested exercises (refine your CV, mock phone interview, help with researching work placements etc.), but students and mentors will communicate informally by email, phone and skype during the five weeks. Your experience will be tailored according to your needs.
Alumni have volunteered from across a wide range of industries, with many based in London at major organisations.
Participating students should attend the launch event on Monday 21 May, from 4:30pm – 6pm in Heslington Hall. You will meet with your mentor, receive a short briefing about the programme, and drinks / a buffet will be served.

All postgraduate students are invited to come and question the candidates at 6pm on the 23rd May 2012 in JJ’s (Halifax). The Vote will take place on www.yorkgsa.org/vote from 28 May - 4th June. The Vote will close at 4pm.

Applications for College Tutors now open

Postgraduates and staff are invited to apply for posts as College Tutors and Deans for 2012-13. There is a single application process for posts in all colleges. Application forms are online now. The following posts are expected to be available:
• Alcuin – two Tutors
• Derwent – one Dean and two Tutors
• Goodricke – up to four Tutors
• James – three Tutors
• Halifax – at least three Tutors
• Langwith – four Tutors
• Vanbrugh – three Tutors (Interviews will take place on Wednesday 23 May 9.30am-12noon)
• Wentworth – two Tutors

Deadline for applications Friday May 11th
Interviews will be held during the week 21 to 25 May 2012.

Eligibility
Applicants for College Tutors must be:
• A full-time postgraduate student at the University of York for the year 2012-13. (Unfortunately for legal reasons part-time students are not eligible).
• Registered for a Masters or in the first three years of a PhD programme at York during the year 2012-13.  (Unfortunately for legal reasons students in their 4th or “writing-up” year of a PhD programme are not eligible).
• Not studying for a PGCE or other programme involving lengthy placements (please disclose any likely placements or travel in the application form at the end under “other information”).
Applicants for College Deans must be members of staff at the University of York from October 2012.

Role
College Tutors and Deans are members of the College Welfare Team. College Tutors are expected to work an average of 15 hours a week for the college.
Tutors and Deans are required to live in College and are provided with a free room (tutors) or flat (deans) in college. College tutors rooms are for single occupancy. Partners or spouses are welcome to stay as guests in accordance with College rules but the rooms are not suitable for regular occupation by a partner or spouse. Unfortunately no family accommodation is available.
More details of the role and expectations are available in the agreement that college tutors sign on accepting the role.

Training
Members of the College Welfare Teams are required to attend training. An initial training day will take place in early July. The main training days will be in late September. There will be further half-day or evening training sessions during the year. These are all obligatory for college tutors and deans.

Applications
To prepare to complete the application form you should consider your choice of colleges (up to three preferences) and the skills and experiences that you bring to the role of college tutor or dean. You will have space to submit up to 550 words on “your skills, experience and qualifications for the post” and “how you will enhance the College System if appointed.” There is also space for any other information would like a selection panel to know.

Its election time! What does an officer do?

If you are thinking of standing for election, There are some descriptions of the officer roles available on www.yorkgsa.org: President, Academic Officer, Welfare Officer, Services Officer, Finance and Community Officer to help you decide what role is for you.

GSA Principal Officer Elections will happen during May. Any postgraduate student can be nominated and run for one of the five paid GSA Officer positions: President, Academic Affairs, Welfare, Services and Events, Finance and Community. To find out more about the positions see www.yorkgsa.org/elections or contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

An informal question and answer session will be held every Monday 16th of April, Thursday 19th of April and Thursday 26th of April between 10:00 and 16:00. Come along to the GSA Office in Wentworth, have tea and biscuits and chat to the President about what it means to be a GSA Officer.

Election Schedule:
Nominations: Monday 30th of April to Wednesday 8th of May.
