Academic Support

Although most postgraduates come through their university experience without any problems, there are occasions when things happen which affect your studies.  When this happens, the GSA can provide advice, support and representation; whether you need to know what to do if something happens which will affect your mark in an assessment and you need to know how to register a mitigating circumstances claim, or need advice on facing an academic appeal or disciplinary action.

If you encounter problems, speak to someone as soon as possible; don’t leave it before asking for help! Some basic steps you could take:

  • If you feel comfortable, speak to the Postgraduate Academic Representatives in your department.  They will be able to raise any concerns you have, or contact the GSA themselves if they need to.
  • Pop into the GSA Office and see the Academic Affairs Officer, or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

  • Speak to Kay Mitchell, the GSA Representation Advice & Welfare Coordinator.  Kay works with our Academic Affairs Officer to coordinate our student support service and undertakes both Academic and Welfare Casework for us.  Kay is available for confidential appointments throughout the week, and can be contacted by email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or by phone on 01904 323714

If you feel you qualify for mitigating circumstances consideration, the sooner you speak to us or your department the better. Keep a record; what has happened and when? Keep a log of all phone calls and emails you may receive from supervisors/departments. This will all help us help you.
