Academic Integrity

A university and all those who are part of it (academics, staff and students) can only maintain a high standard and reputation if the work they produce incorporates academic integrity.

Academic Integrity means adopting an honest approach towards your work by correctly referencing your sources and submitting original work.  It is therefore, no surprise that the University of York takes a serious stance regarding the integrity of the qualifications it awards.

All students at the University of York are required to complete the Academic Integrity Tutorial. You can access this tutorial through the Yorkshare VLE. Integrity at York provides you with various resources to prepare you to approach your work with integrity. Further information regarding academic integrity can be found in Academic Integrity: Your Guide.

Being mindful of the following five forms of good academic practice as you complete your assessments will help you improve your academic integrity.

  • Independent learning: you will have to motivate and direct your own studies
  • Developing your study skills: how can you improve your note-making, essay writing skills?
  • Respecting other people’s ideas: acknowledge your sources by knowing how to reference correctly
  • Critical thinking: evaluate your sources and compare and contrast arguments
  • Exam technique: how can you improve your time management

By both, using ‘good academic practice’ and being aware of what constitutes as academic misconduct and the University’s procedures concerning this, you can do your utmost to avoid academic misconduct and produce academic work that you can be proud of.
